Before I start doing the internet network marketing and before I found the 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing and the Renegade Network Marketing online, my view of Network Marketing was that I love the products and the business concept of leverage, but dreading to market my business with the marketing method that was always being taught (i.e. the 3 foot rule). Every time I had to pitch my products or business opportunity in random places to some random people, I would get butterflies in my stomach. I felt like I was about to go through a tax audit with the IRS, where I feel like I would be heavily scrutinized by whomever I approached as they wanted to find out what my real intentions in talking to them were. I think this perception was due to the many negative responses that I had received from my potential prospects and warm market that I had been approaching with the traditional method, the 3 foot rule, which would normally go like this: “Network Marketing is just a scam, I don’t know why you bought into that”; “Huh, look at you, trying to befriend everybody so that you could pitch to them”; and it went on and on…
Luckily, even though I got really discouraged with this marketing approach due to my potential prospects negative responses, I did not want to give up pursuing my dream of achieving financial independence through the Network Marketing business. Therefore, I embarked on a quest to find a much better marketing method online. The day I found Ann Sieg and her 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing and Renegade Network Marketing was the beginning of my Internet Network Marketing journey. For me, what the books did were:
1) It made me feel LESS GUILTY about being uncomfortable when I had to pitch my products or business opportunity to some random people (the 3 foot rule of prospecting) to make it in my network marketing business
2) It opened my eyes that to succeed in my Network Marketing business, I don’t have to do the 3 foot rule anymore and I can just ditch it!
I felt truly LIBERATED! The books have empowered me to embark on a totally different route to prospect and market my business!
Traditional network marketing has been proven to be challenging for many network marketers. The major hurdle is that you have to find some warm contacts, or basically, “bother” your friends, family, acquaintances, and those “friendly” looking people in the grocery store check out line to tell them about the awesome opportunity that you have found, that can save them from their miserable jobs. You’re their savior! That’s the kind of mindset that every network marketer is taught to have so that we can go out there and tough it out when it comes time to prospecting traditionally. Unfortunately, this is what’s caused the huge attrition rate in the Network Marketing business. In the 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing e-book, Ann Sieg mentioned that according to the annual reports of many network marketing companies, along with research done by numerous tax preparation services, only 1-2% of network marketers earn substantial incomes. Similar studies indicate that 97% of network marketers never reach a positive cashflow in their business! 97% folks! This basically says that ONLY 3 out of 100 network marketers have succeeded in building their network marketing business up to the point where they can be financially independent by having residual income coming in regularly from their business. The 97% network marketers are still struggling to make it happen. Some of this struggling network marketers have even quit the business altogether and now are probably talking bad about the business. Why do you think every time the word MLM or Network Marketing is mentioned, people cringe? What you see here is the results of negative “Words of Mouth” of the Network Marketing business in action!
When you have time, do some research online and compile bunch of websites that portrays the Network Marketing or MLM business in a negative way. I will give you couple examples:
1) http://www.mlmwatch.org/01General/10lies.html
If you read one by one item that the author lays out in this article, they sound almost similar to the ‘”The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing” by Ann Sieg! This site is linked to another website called the “MLM Watch”. This site is intended to be the MLM watchdog for the Network Marketing industry.
2) http://www.mlm-thetruth.com/30typicalMLMmisrepresentations.htm
Again, if you read the 30 items that the author lays out in the article, they sound almost similar to the ‘”The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing” by Ann Sieg. The author, Jon M. Taylor, runs the MLM – The Truth website that’s also intended to be the MLM watchdog for the Network Marketing industry.
What I found to be an irony is that the two websites above are intended to be the MLM watchdog for the Network Marketing industry, and yet their list of MLM/Network Marketing lies/misrepresentations are pretty much in alignment with Ann Sieg’s 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing. Why the irony? Because these sites pretty much advocate ordinary folks like you and me to stay zillion miles away from the scummy Network Marketing industry whereas Ann Sieg, out of her fondness for what the Network Marketing business can provide, exposes the 7 false beliefs that have lead to people misperceptions about the entire industry so that the high attrition rate can be reduced!
Get the picture now?
Why do you think these two websites exist? Are they just couple of Nay-sayers, Network Marketing Haters? Did they one morning wake up and decide out of the blue to smack the bejesus out of the Network Marketing business?
Can we entirely refute their perceptions that the Network Marketing / MLM business is a scam AND those greedy Network Marketers are out there to trick the helpless and clueless folks into joining their Network Marketing business?
If yes, HOW? Can we just close our ears and minds, move on and hope that our prospects are not going to do thorough research before they join our business and run into the above or similar websites? Is this a realistic expectation, especially with all kinds of information that the internet can provide?
I believe that YES, we can refute their perceptions by DOING THE OPPOSITE of what the authors mentioned as the lies/misrepresentations in the Network Marketing business. And this is actually what the 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing and The Renegade Network Marketing books outline. The 7 Great Lies outlines the fallacies in the traditional Network Marketing prospecting method, and the Renegade Network Marketing lays out the kind of mindset and tools we need to do just the opposite of the fallacies presented in the 7 Great Lies book.
Just like in any problem solving situation, the following is a step by step process that one has to go through to get to the solutions:
Step 1: Acknowledge that the problem exists. In our case, our problem is: High attrition rate of 97%
Step 2: Learn what contributes to the problem by reading books, the internet, talking to other network marketers etc. In our case, our biggest root cause is: Network Marketers are not taught the proper sales and marketing methods due to the 7 fallacies that have been taught over and over again in many Network Marketing companies. The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing offers some idea of the root causes of this high attrition rate.
Step 3: Brainstorm for potential solutions for each cause. In our case, the solution will be to do the exact OPPOSITE of the fallacies. For example, one of the 7 Great Lies is “Everyone is your prospect”. Plan to do the opposite – refrain from pitching to everyone you run into. By the way, we’ll get to the how to market your Network Marketing business if you refrain from pitching your business to everyone later. The Renegade Network Marketing book offers some idea for the potential solutions to the high attrition rate problem.
Step 4: Implement solutions. In our case, for example, you can start on daily basis to refrain from pitching to everyone you run into about your business. The Renegade Network Marketing book offers some idea on how to implement the potential solutions to the high attrition rate problem.
What do you think? Are you ready to take step 1?
